| What are these electric bicycles? According to State law, electric bicycles are defined as having fully operative pedals for human propulsion and an electric motor, which cannot be driven at speeds of more than 20 mph on level ground. (CVC 406[b]) As such, electric bicycles are exempt from the motor vehicle financial responsibility, driver license, and moped licence plate requirements. You are also allowed to ride in bicycle lanes. (CVC 12804.9). How fast do electric bikes go? Our electric bikes are rated 18-20mph by the manufacturers. Naturally, actual speed will vary depending on rider weight, terrain and road conditions. How far will a bike go on a single charge? On average, one should expect between 15-30 miles per charge. The more pedaling you do, the less strain on the battery and the farther you will go. Larger riders or people carrying heavy loads can also expect reduced miles..We usually charge our bikes every three days. This being after a total of 4 miles per day with steep hills. How long does it take to charge the battery? The initial charge will require 6-12 hours. For routine charging, lithium-ion batteries will take less time, maybe 2-6 hours. Lithium batteries do not need to be fully drained between charges, so you can keep your battery fully charged. How long will the battery last? Battery life will vary depending on the type of battery you choose and how well you maintain it. The Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries on our bikes last the longest - anywhere from 700-1500 charges. Lead acid batteries last between 300-500 charges. To extend the life of your battery, charge the battery regularly. If you store your bike for prolonged periods of time, both the batteries and charger should be stored at temperatures above freezing and recharged every 8 weeks. The longer a battery sits uncharged, the faster the life will be reduced. Why are brushless motors better? Brushed hub motors use metal "brushes"' that contact a rotating part of the motor. Because there is physical contact between stationary and moving parts, wear will occur, and over time the brushes will have to be replaced. With a brushless motor, there is no contact between any of the parts inside the motor. The end result is a motor with no theoretical life limit. |
